This week, the week of March 28- April 1, 2016, we will be funny songs!

We call it:  "April Fools Week"

April 1, 2016

As we march toward April 1st let's take a look at some silly songs this week.

Anyone who knows me knows I have a slightly twisted sense of humor and novelty songs have always been attractive to my ear.  I spent many a Sunday night listening (and recording) the Dr. Demento show and devouring whatever "fun" songs I could.

Picking just FIVE songs that amuse me would be impossible, but I'll try my best and probably end up revisiting this theme a few times!

Today's entry was not a hit song, which is quite the aberration for this group!

It is clear though that the members were as influenced by the zany shows they watched and heard as children as much as I was as this has all the marking of a bit from The Goon Show.

I'd venture to say you'll not find the original song anywhere on line....at least for free!

Recorded in 1967 it was released on the "Let It Be" album three years later.

Growing up as a child of the 70's I was part of that generation that had local "kids shows" showing all the cartoons they could get on the cheap and, of course, Three Stooges reruns.

So it was double the fun in 1983 when I could go roller skating to this little novelty tune!

Off Jump 'N the Saddle's Top 20 (#15) success of "The Curly Shuffle" they released an album in 1984 but never saw the same kind of success again.

Heading into 1980's and my teenage / formative years I found my attraction to humorous songs only intensifying.

The story of hearing "Another One Rides The Bus" will told at a later date, but it was the catalyst for shaping my already warping sense of humor.

Now that that window had been opened my ears picked out any novelty song and my mind devoured it!

Today's entry also was heard by me in 1981.

A hit all over the world and number one in multiple countries, "Shaddap you face" only reached #53 onthe Billboard Hot 100 for Joe Dolce and was his only foray into the Hot 100 in the US.

As a side note I always loved the "B" side of the 45 also.

While I admit I love a funny song I always feel if an artist strikes it big with a novelty record too early it could be career poison.

Too often their more serious or mainstream songs get lost in the shuffle of that one-off funny hit.  Whether it was intentionally a comedy song or just one with a funny lilt to it.

On the other end of the spectrum you have serious musicians and groups that are beloved but see their biggest hits be one of those funny songs.

A true, living, rock and roll icon, Chuck Berry hit the top 40 of the Hot 100 half a dozen times.  None did better than this novelty tune of a boy and his ding-a-ling, going to number one for two weeks in October of 1972.

In fact it was Berry's second (and last) top ten hit.  The other peaked in 1964.

The seeds for that though come from cutting my teeth on golden oldies of the 50's and 60's and finding the humorous songs in my mom and dad's collections of LP's.

So let's start there!

Any song that was offbeat or out of the norm was a hit to me.  Songs like "Speedo" or "Ya Ya" may not have been "novelty" songs in the purest sense of the term but I loved them.

Today's song was one I learned as I got older.  It spent 14 weeks on the Hot 100 and went all the way to #1 in 1961!

It was Ernie K. Doe's only top 40 hit.
