This week, the week of March 28- April 1, 2016, we will be funny songs!
We call it: "April Fools Week"
March 29, 2016
As we march toward April 1st let's take a look at some silly songs this week.
Anyone who knows me knows I have a slightly twisted sense of humor and novelty songs have always been attractive to my ear. I spent many a Sunday night listening (and recording) the Dr. Demento show and devouring whatever "fun" songs I could.
Picking just FIVE songs that amuse me would be impossible, but I'll try my best and probably end up revisiting this theme a few times!
While I admit I love a funny song I always feel if an artist strikes it big with a novelty record too early it could be career poison.
Too often their more serious or mainstream songs get lost in the shuffle of that one-off funny hit. Whether it was intentionally a comedy song or just one with a funny lilt to it.
On the other end of the spectrum you have serious musicians and groups that are beloved but see their biggest hits be one of those funny songs.
A true, living, rock and roll icon, Chuck Berry hit the top 40 of the Hot 100 half a dozen times. None did better than this novelty tune of a boy and his ding-a-ling, going to number one for two weeks in October of 1972.
In fact it was Berry's second (and last) top ten hit. The other peaked in 1964.
