Billy Joel Week! Day 5!

This week, the week of May 9-13, 2016, we will look at songs from this week's birthday bob Billy Joel!

We call it:  "Billy Joel Week..."

May 11, 2016

Not all the titles are clever....

Billy Joel celebrates his birthday on May 9th and we'' celebrate all week with some lesser known tracks that may or may not have been "hits" but are listening worthy.

Let's wrap up the week long celebration of Mr. Joel's birthday with some album tracks that you may not here on the radio very often...if at all!

"All for Leyna" ~ Glass Houses (1980)

"If I only Had the Words To Tell You" ~ Piano Man (1973)

"All You Want To Do is Dance" ~ Turnstiles (1976)

"Sometimes A Fantasy" ~ Glass Houses (1980)

I've seen Billy Joel in concert many, many times.  The last time being two years ago and I had the opportunity to record some his banter with the crowd and a few bits of the music to show that despite age and time he is still an amazing performer and remains in good voice.

And that wraps up another week!

A new theme and more stuff next Monday!

The last couple days there was a bit of a theme to the videos.

Today is just some of my favorite tunes that, again, weren't "hits" but that I have always enjoyed.

"Zanzibar" ~ "52nd Street"

"Miami 2017 (I've Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)" ~ "Turnstiles"

"The Ballad of Billy the Kid" ~ "Piano Man"

"Travelin' Prayer" ~ "Piano Man"

Billy Joel takes a LOT of heat from critics for, well, everything.  His lyrics are too hokey or too something, his music isn't what they want it to be, they don't understand why so many people like his music, whatever.

At the time of the release of the "River of Dreams" album he had sold more discs than any solo artist that Elvis.

And for many of his fans (myself included) the songs can just speak to you.  Either at a time of need or just to a time.

"Summer, Highland Falls" (often referred to as "Sadness or Euphoria") while having no specific meaning to my life still makes me "feel" something.  And that something can change depending on when and where I hear the song.

A later song, added on to the "Great Hits Vol 1 and 2", I know DIE HARD Joel fans who hated this song from the time it was released. "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" is another song that doesn't cover anything specific to me but doesn't that beat and that message just seem to speak to relaxing, letting go and taking that deep breath and moving on?

Maybe it just does to me?

While he written some wonderful love songs he has also seen his fair share of relationships gone bad for one reason or another.

From his 1971 Albums "Cold Spring Harbor" (produced at the wrong speed"Everybody Loves You Now"  is an early mix of Joel working New York into his music and his songs about ladies who demand great attention and know they can get away with it.

That theme would get played out more than a few times over his career.

"Stiletto" ~ off the album "52nd Street"

"Christie Lee" ~ off the album "Innocent Man"

And there are more to be sure!

Today's song is off the 1973 "Piano Man" album and is special to me as I used some of the lyrics during my best man toast at my sister's wedding...this same week 17 years ago.

"Well now you tell me you love somebody
And you'll love 'em forever, you may love 'em forever,
But you won't like 'em all of the time.
Well now you tell me you need somebody
For the rest of your life you might have somebody,
But you won't want 'em ev'ry day."

And yes, they are still happily married today!
